Poker Side Pot Rules
Poker is typically played 'table stakes', meaning only the chips in play at the beginning of each hand may be used throughout the hand. The table stakes rule has an application called the 'All-In' rule, which states that a player cannot be forced to forfeit a hand because the player does not have enough chips to call a bet.
A side pot occurs in a game in which there are more than two players left in the hand, and one player has bet all the chips they have in front of them (is all-in). When one player is all-in, the other two may continue to bet between themselves.
These additional bets are 'on the side', between the remaining two players.
The player who is all-in and has no more chips is ineligible to win any of these additional bets, since he is not risking an equitable amount of chips.
